Truthfully, I had never heard the bad omen about a bird coming into a house. I think back as a kid when a bat occasionally found its way down our brick chimney and would hang on my mom's curtains. Now that should have been an omen but I recall my mom was always worried more about rabies.
According to the Audubon website on 'bird superstitions', the significance of a bird flying into your home only means a death will come ONLY if the bird DIES in the house. If it flies back out through an open window or door has NO significance.
What if the bird somehow ends up in your heating vent? Had this happen a month back. Starling sitting behind the grille for one of the 1st floor returns. Best I can tell it somehow got into the main return (which is big enough to fly in), then went down the duct but couldn't fly back up. Obviously there's a hole somewhere but I have no idea where.
