Default Has anyone replaced a drop-in electric range?

We just bought a house that has an old drop-in electric range that needs to be replaced. We were considering replacing it with a slide-in. Has anyone else done this? Thanks for your suggestions.

Anu.

Yes, it can be done.

Since the counter-top width opening is sized to the narrower drop-in range, you'll have to open up the area a bit for the standard range cabinet by cutting the countertop.

I cut some scrap formica pieces to "trim" the new opening and set the new range in place. Looks just fine.

If you don't want to cut the countertop, then you'll have to use a new "drop in" range ... which isn't a bad deal, either.

We did in one house we had. The previous opening was about 1/2" too small so I just sanded the edges of the countertop back to make it large enough for the new stove. It didn't take much work at all to get it to fit.

the electric for the drop-in is a greenfield whip going to a junction box behind the range. you'll have to replace that with a receptacle, as the slide-in will have a cord.

also; they do make a slide-in that has front mounted controls so you don't have to cut the back of the countertop when changing from drop-in to slide-in. you'll only have to cut the bottom of the cabinet, which is much an easier task for a homeowner to handle than trying to cut the countertop.
