Looking for a job in the Houston area
Hi,
My wife recently excepted a job offer in Houston and will start in late July. so I been looking for a job also for the past 2 plus weeks on the internet. However, I have yet to get one reply, and all the jobs that I applied for I'm well qualified comparing my resume to their requirement. In fact most of them had much lower qualifications than my previous two jobs I had here in Florida and I got my last two jobs with ease. This is starting to worry me, I'm starting to wonder if its because I still live in Florida, and companies are reluctant to look for candidates who still live in another state or am I just being too impatient? How realistic is it to find a job in Houston while you're still living in Florida? or do I not have much of a chance until I move to Houston. Thanks!

I'm looking for jobs in Marketing Analyst, Account Executive, Product management and Inside or Outside Sales. I have experience in all of them. I see alot of job opportunities in Houston, for some reason I'm hearing no replies. Funny thing is, the two times I looked for jobs here in Florida in the same categories, it didnt take me long at all, and I had alot less experience back then also.

No replies to this will be any help if we don't know the sector you are working in and your experience in the area.

If you are not yet here in Houston then the reason you haven't had any nibbles is because employers want the candidates to be local (as in already in Houston). Once you have actually moved here I think you will likely have much better results.

Hi,
You and I are in the same line of work and I'm "considering" relocating to Houston. I have been researching the market and it looks solid. The business sector is very strong so you should have no problems landing a job. Just be patient as the good jobs always take time to land. You may have to pick up something with a light salary initially, and then once your grounded (as a local) can move upward.

Hi,
We, too, are also in Florida and planning a move to Houston as soon as my husband gets a job or our house sells - whichever comes first! He is in the construction (project management, sales) business which is just booming in Houston, but despite applying to what seems like a million jobs in Houston, has heard nothing. He is also way overqualified for a lot of the jobs that he has applied for! He always includes a cover letter basically saying that he can be there for an interview and can relocate on a dime (I'm a flight attendant, so he can be on the next plane!). But still nothing. We have family there, so are now (after reading these posts) considering using their address and just acting like he's already there. Sounds sneaky, but he really can be there and available tomorrow, so I don't feel too guilty. I know there is a lot of demand in your area too (lots of Monster searching), so maybe that really is the problem. Good luck to you and, I agree, you shouldn't have a problem once you become (or are considered) a local!!

Thanks for clearing this up a bit.
My husband is in the Telecommunications field (RF and Land Mobile Radio) with 10 +years experience, previous militray, etc etc. We have sent many job applications for positions in Houston but have hardly had any response. If the companies are looking for local candidates it makes it difficult for us as we're in the Middle East looking to repatriate.
I have come to the conclusion that the internet job hunting is time consuming and it hardly ever works.
