I spent my first 24 years in West Los Angeles, 1 year in Orange, and the last 5 years in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

I think TNRyan23 pretty much has it right. It has absolutely nothing to do with jealousy, the economy, etc. It's purely a contrasting lifestyle. Though some may not admit it, liberals tend to think they are morally superior to conservatives. They dislike and look down upon those who "cling to their guns and religion" like the stereotypical Texan, as shown on television. The media's portrayal of Alabama is even worse. I'm not going to comment on whether or not I see where the exaggeration comes from, though.

On the other hand, people here in fly over country think that California is the land of fruits and nuts. They're not as vocal about it as Californians are of the south, though.

Spoiler
The media's portrayal of Alabama is even worse.

And rightfully so - next to MS, Southern Alabama has the second worst quality of life of anywhere in the U.S. - it's still like going back 20+ years just changing planes in Birmingham aka fly over country -

There is NOTHING wrong with Alabama. I came to Texas from Tennessee and to be honest, People from California must not hate it too bad since that's pretty much all you see there anymore, CA license plates.

Funny thing is... People from California invade places like Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, and Arkansas to escape things like crime, taxes, cost of living, ect, ect, then come to these places, complain that it's "not California" then fight and vote to make their new place JUST LIKE what they left...

Don't get me started on California, Before the great exodus of Californians, houses were affordable in Nashville...

As for going back 20+ years.. What would make you say that ?

Excellent observation

So the answer is that Californians hate Houston because it's too close to Alabama?

Californians hating houston? sounds made up. Houstonians love to make a big deal about comments from a few posters. This is their own way of making it seem like people care (or know) about Houston
