Well, Dubai had unlimited money....or so they thought.

This is a pretty fantastical thread anyway. "OMG OMG LETS BUILD A DOME WTFLOLBBQ" Whatever. The only dome we'll have is the one that's empty right now.

Put the ski lodge in the dome, problem solved.

IMHO, Dubai is the perfect modern example of a city too tied with it's ego to realize it's economy can ever tank.

Word to the wise there- Don't build when you don't have money.

Now they have more on-hold/cancelled projects than anywhere else in the world, and are leading the list on vacancy rates.

I agree, but I'm just really happy our city is smarter about it's vacancy rates and budget.

And Alphajet, I would refute some of your posts, but it's evident you have barely any idea of what you are talking about. Some of that is true, but most of that is not.

Trust me, living in Houston >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any city on the Arabian peninsula. Take it for someone who has spent good time there. (no offense to anyone from there)

You can compare El Paso more to them, and even El Paso edges them out on standard of living.

What would happen if we kicked all the illegals out? How many consumers would we lose?

I'm with Omanshi. Invest more money and time into Galveston. I love the feel and look of that place.

I seriously would love to live there if the city would just redevelop itself.

Interesting coming from a kid from Sugar Land - who lives in Chicago and roots for the Lakers.....

I just grateful to be living here in the U.S. where these types of topics and opinions can be discussed openly, not like many of the Third World Countries in the Middle East, Africa & India - many of these topics and discussions would be considered taboo!

It may be different now - I am really not sure - but for a long time, the Moody family in Galveston resisted any progress and outside interference. I really do not not know if that has changed or not - but it could be a impediment to anything good and different. In other words, we could offer a lot and get rejected. I just do not know if the stranglehold the Moody family had on Galveston still exists. Anyone?

Maybe Ike put some things in perspective, but historically islanders have had a very self-reliant mentality - the idea that Houston somehow "stole" its standing after the 1900 storm comes into play too. It's like a lingering bitterness. In today's reality, Galveston is on the borderline of irrelevance in economic terms. UTMB survived by the skin of its teeth and that's about all that Galveston has besides the restaurants and hospitality industry - not exactly high-paying stuff. Galveston County's tax and employment base is now on the mainland. The island's future may well be as a bedroom community/playground for outsiders, which is a bitter pill for BOIs to swallow.

It'd also be a hard sell for Houstonians to justify sending their tax dollars to an island city 50 miles away. You'd have to demonstrate that Houston has something to gain out of that. I'm not sure what directing people to Galveston to spend their money there does to benefit Houston. This is sort of like Philadelphia or NYC pumping money into Atlantic City.
