Oak Forest comes to mind - but for $200K, it will be a 3 bedroom under 1500 square feet and possibly only one bathroom. That house with 2000 square feet is going to be in the suburbs. We do have Park N Ride for your husband, though. He takes the bus to downtown from the nearest Park n Ride to the subdivision. Spring Shadows in Spring Branch would not be bad, a 40 minute commute on I-10. Also a good school district there

$200K will get you close in but small - or larger and newer, but a commute. You have to decide which works best for you. Both areas are full of people who made that decision their way.

Don't give up your pets!

Over by me is about the only exception to that rule anymore. While within the neighborhood itself is fine, there is some certifiable funk surrounding it, so you have to be able to deal with that. It is what it is. You can get 3000 sq ft on large lot for that price and still be 10 minutes to downtown, you just have to tolerate some of the areas around it.

I second don't give up on the pets!

Coming from a small town, the traffic for me will be downright scary initially but I'm sure I'll adjust. I have no idea what mine will be like because I don't know where I'll be teaching yet but I'll worry less if my husband isn't out in that mess too.
The one I know has a side yard about 10 ft bt 50 ft. with a gate... the seller has 2 dogs...and not far from a dog park..
