My husband's employer is moving us from Shreveport, LA to Houston. I just finished my third year of teaching and will need to find a job ASAP! I am certified in K-5 general ed and K-12 Art. I have a spotless track record and have out performed every goal my principal has set. Given that, I worry that finding a job will still be difficult. Here in Shreveport, its all about who you know, not performance. I've seen it and I know. thats Louisiana for you. I worked in a low-income, ill-run school and still managed to do well. I searched for jobs at better schools but to no avail. I am terrified that it will be worse in Houston because I've heard the market is so competitive. Am I wrong in this assumption?

I'm in the same spot - although I'm certified for secondary ELA.

My advice would be to apply in every district online, then try to market yourself to principals. Write letters of interest and include how your class can help the kids and the school meet their TAKS objectives. Do some research, look at the numbers.

I am a secondary social studies teacher from Colorado and could not even get a phone call about jobs in Colorado. I have since been to Texas for two job fairs and already had five face to face interviews and two phone interviews. Social studies teachers are a dime a dozen and the fact that I got interviews says a lot. I do however coach so that definitely helps me out. Budgets and retirements are finalized the second week in July when they start to turn up the heat on hiring teachers.

I have heard that Houston has a difficult teacher job market ... which surprises me. Get your ESL, and Sped. certification if you can. ESL and Special Ed will make you more marketable. If you don't find anything, volunteer or hire on as an assistant. My advice is don't sub ... teachers as a rule don't like subs and it easier to gain a favorable impression if you are seen every day helping to make their lives easier as a teaching assistant. That is how I obtained my last teaching position. Tough market everywhere right now.
