That has nothing to do with it. There are places within Houston that are vastly safer than the area surrounding U of H.

Actually, many places.

FWIW, my dad has a PhD in CS from U of H (1994), and doesn't recommend the university to me or any of my sisters for this reason. He primarily went there due the fact he had a career in Houston and needed a part-time PhD program.

Regardless, that's a bad comparison to compare UH to universities in much smaller and less populated areas.

Personally, I wouldn't go to UH (I'm already regretting going to TSU; don't ask why I went here in the first place lol).

We're only talking about crime here, not the population of the surrounding city/area. The OP is displaying crime as her primary concern. She didn't say anything about not wanting to live in a smaller/more rural community.

Another individual said, U of H is "relatively safe." Relative to what?

In sum, maybe I am making the suggestion of "college-town" life. (Which I whole-heartedly, support, BTW). That was the point of my post.

3rd Ward is nowhere near as bad as it used to be. Historically, 3rd Ward was the most crime-ridden, desperate Houston ghetto, even worse than the 5th Ward. I tell you one thing, walk through the desperate parts of 3rd Ward for an indication of what your life will be like if you don't get your stuff together.

I don't know why these folk are scared of 3rd Ward, it's just like your normal Houston neighborhood, upscale parts next to the ghetto. When I attended TSU, sometimes I would get accosted by some Southsiders who were still on that Northside/Southside battle from a decade ago, in that case I remind them if you want another Northside/Southside battle, be my guest (I also remind them how Northside cats used to run through Southside jackin . I don't look for trouble but if it comes to me I'll handle myself accordingly). Don't get me wrong, 3rd Ward is no Mayberry and it can have Baghdad-like violent crime at times but it's really not that bad anymore.

You'll be fine - just exercise caution and good judgement like you would use in a mall parking lot, etc. Lots of suburban kids and young adults go to UH main campus and do just fine (and enjoy it).

There's a difference between someone stealing your coat and someone trying to rob you with his gun pointed at you, and obviously threatening to kill you.
what are you talking about. Me and my bf live near third ward and we walk there all the time, despite being white. At night!!!!!!!. He gets whistled at but never bothered.

And I went to UH and was never bothered.

I am not saying it is completely safe, no where is. but it is not as bad as y'all make it sound.

The problem is that it can "be as bad as it sounds". I went to UH for nearly 3 years and I always checked the UHPD website because there was a criminal reported every day. Just look at July UHDPS - July 2010 Daily Crime Bulletin (one armed robbery on July 2nd).

You have to be really aware of your surroundings, and be cautious of who else is outside. I stayed late studying almost daily, so before it got really late, I would go out to my car and move it closer to the building where I was at.

NEVER leave your valuables unattended. Most of the daily crime reports are theft incidents. The big MD Anderson library is a hot-spot for theft, because anyone can go inside, even non students. With the way people dressed around campus, I could not tell if they were from 3rd ward or coming from Moody towers (dorm housing). People just go and wait for someone to leave their bag/purse/laptop unattended for a second and next thing you know it's gone.

Parking is still a pain at UH, and you will find yourself parking really far from the buildings you have to access during normal hours, unless you don't have/need a car. Always walk in groups to your car, or move it closer, or call for a police escort. Walking alone to your car/dorm when it's late, even if on still on campus grounds, makes you an easy target.

I admit that I tried to avoid driving on Scott simply because they are so many people outside just loitering. Look at the gas station on Scott and Cullen for example. There is reason that the Popeyes on Scott has thick glass diving the cashiers and customers.

Maybe they could use some parking at the Galleria with an underground rail directly to SUB at UH. Is Judy Markoe still there?

That is any college anywhere.

I remember when I was in school in San antonio laptops were continuously being stolen. I men DAILY!!!!

I do admit the black guys around UH dress like they are stuck in the 90's but people's dress is no reason to fear them.
neatly groomed people wearing buttondowned shirts and carrying briefcases scare me a whole lot more than guys with jeans below their cracks
