Wow, that's amazing! We are looking to spend about 1000-1100 a month.

I tend to disagree. There are many other Neighborhoods close enough that are not as pricey as rice, montrose or Museum District. The Heights, meyerland and near east are much more affordable and just as close to everything.

I would not recommend Austin at all.

NIce place to visit, not so nice to live. Even with all the weirdness

We were originally looking at Austin, but were steered to Houston due to our like of diversity and art. I volunteer at the Denver Art Museum and the Denver Contemporary Art museum and I think Houston would have the art, museums, etc. that are important to me. People told me Austin was more of a college town surrounded by suburbs than a metropolitan city. I also thought Austin was more expensive.

well with that type of money you can find a real nice place in many areas.

How many bedrooms are you looking to get?

I was originally going to get a nice two bedroom in the heart of Montrose (Montrose and Pacific) for $1000

Montrose is just about the most walkable neighborhoods in Houston.

You can walk to tons of restaurants. It is fairly close to many grocery stores and is a very short drive to the bigger chains. It is also close to the rail, downtown and the museum district. The theater district is also fairly close.

We don't mind living in an area that is a little on the gritty low income side if it is close to the nicer areas and we aren't going to be mugged or shot in a drive by or something.

Houston has a great art scene, however tacking down a local artist is hard to do. Lot's of musuems and investment galleries, very little "artsey fartsey" studios to wander into.

Asheville NC blows Houston away for affordable/fun local art and shops.

There are over 30 museums in the district. The Museum of Natural science is in the top 5 most visited museums in the country. The museum of Fine arts is also exquisite.

Austin is nice for partying, government and IT, but honestly is partying all people do??

I love Austin and would visit every chance I get, but I would not live there.

Also, as you mentioned, it is not very diverse.

Houston has sooooooo many different restaurants, you will find something good no matter where you are from

Lol, that is random. I hate snow, that's the thing I hate about Denver. I think Wisconsin sounds COLD.
