@DanielWayne - santiago is a beautiful city, and one of the most modern cities I have ever been in. It has its bad parts, but i wouldnt call them "slums" like you see in Brazil, Venezuela or Colombia. And they're not too dangerous - mostly just poor... I love Chile, but I guess after four years I'm just tiring of the "expat" life a little bit and being so far away from my family. But by the sound of things, Texas may be more "foreign" to me than Chile is!!!!!

I think you have received great advice. Houston could prove to be a new adventure with learning to drive and such but I think it will be hit or miss for a person of your travels. If your open minded, then you may grow to love Houston like some have or at least enjoy your stay.

As far as where to stay, I would say Midtown. I am going to throw out an intersection that seems to be close to a lot of things that I do in Midtown: McGowan and Bagby. Close to the light rail, close to some basic amenities, and close to some bars and restaurants. I would suggest getting a bike because Houston is flat and it can bridge the gap between places that are too far too walk.

Yes, get a bike.

I can name 50 bars and 50 restaraunts off the top of my head in the midtown/downtown area. There is plenty to do. You could live at the new Camdem apartments which is right off the rail line if you want.
