Hibiscus is the best for now. And you can get them for 50-70 percent off if you look. Pentas is OK too. I just put some in the ground a couple of weeksago and they're doing fine.

I got Mexican heather 2 weeks ago. It was on sale at the RCW Nursery on 249. Planted according to guide. I don't know what happened - they are dead. Just brown with one single branch nice and green in each of them ( 24 ). So much for saving.....

Hibiscus should take off right now, even moreso in September and be in full bloom in October. Some general tropical plant good, slow release, heavy-phosphorus will get you all kinds of flowers then.

For cold-hardy it's hit or miss. I've had one completely die off once it got to 40 degrees, and my neighbor's survived the freeze where we had 4 nights in a row in the mid-20s last year. It's about 4 ft shorter now & a lot more squatty, though.

Hibiscus are on sale now at Home Depot. Ranges anywhere from $4.95 and up. I went crazy in there!

Watch those big-box plants. Many of them aren't as cold hardy as they claim, and some are even better than they claim. Very inconsistent. But for $5 it's probably worth the gamble.
