Default Is Houston's Downtown Dead At night?

Hello guys new to CD
Anyways I selected to go the University of Houston for mostly to get some independence from my nutty parents. I am from San Antonio which has a great nightlife in its downtown but in CD and other places I heard rumors that Houston Downtown is a ghost town after 6PM

From Hostonians only (not visitors) Are these rumors true?

Solely my opinion as an sporadic Downtown bar-hopper. I at one point frequented the Downtown Molly's Pub and Dean's. (One of my best HS friends was the resident DJ at Dean's.)

It really depends on what is going on that night.

On most weeknights when there are no sports/concerts going on, it can be fairly dead and even when there is something going on, a lot of the visitors for concerts/sports hurry up and get back home when the event is over. Some stick around.

Last Wednesday night when they had the Manchester soccer match, it was pretty packed for a weeknight. On Fridays and Saturdays there is usually a very good crowd. However, with the impact of Washington Rd., some feel that the Downtown bar/club scene is becoming lower class (or I guess "declining"), but it's still all right in my view.

Tonight was doing okay due to the Astros game and it being Friday. One of the premier bars in Downtown, the Flying Saucer (on Main and Capitol), has a pretty solid clientčle. It's arguably the busiest bar in Downtown. (It's definitely up there.)

The outer fringes of Downtown (namely the area around Harris County Jail, the NE side) is the area to stay away from as there are hoodlums' families waiting for them to be released from jail. Pretty seedy and depressing place, esp. at night. There also appears to be a large distaste (at least on this forum) for the Greyhound Station that is actually in Midtown, but is very close to to the Southern end of Downtown.

I should also note that IMHO law enforcement is very strong Downtown as it's the headquarters for the City and County (obviously) also, esp. on Friday and Saturday nights for the club-going crowd.

You should checkout what I consider to be one of the best parts of the city.

You don't need to go to Downtown. There are many great places with nightlife.
Night Clubs & Bars - Houston Information

First, nightclubs in Houston are not gritty little hole-in-the-wall bars with neon decor and a tendency to smell. Second, they are not places where the walls are only adorned with televisions broadcasting ESPN. Third, they are not places where the only form of entertainment comes from a rickety pool table or an electronic dartboard. There you have it. Now that you know what nightclubs are not, convincing you to check out the Houston nightclub scene shouldn’t be hard. If all else fails, remember that they will probably be beautiful, the drinks will probably be served in something other than bottles and the music will probably be good for dancing.

If anything in specific makes Houston particularly cool, it’s the selection of local bars. As random as can be and alive with unique, spunky personalities, these hangouts cover almost every aspect of the entertainment spectrum. Houston’s local bars reflect the city’s multifaceted personality, blending the awkward with the graceful and the gritty with the glamorous.
No matter who you are or how you like to spend your nights out, Houston is supplied with a seemingly limitless list of places to get your own special groove on.

Very outdated list. More than a few of those places are no longer in business.

Two thoughts:

1. Nutty parents make even nuttier kids.

2. Molly's Pub is a pretty good, laid-back suburban style hangout.

Downtown is not as popular a place as it used to be 6, 7, 8 years ago when the Super Bowl came to town, but you can still find some signs of life. Everything shifted to Rice Village & Midtown post Super Bowl. Now the hot spot seems to be Washington. Montrose has always been popular, even with straight folks. I kinda wish the Richmond strip & Uptown would make a come back. Those were some fun times too.

Houston's nightlife shifts with the wind. One moment this area is trendy, then its off to the next up & coming place.
