I like Stone Mill Bakery. They have two locations, one on Kirby and the other on Voss @ San Felipe. I usually get multiple loaves to put in the freezer when I go because neither location is exactly in my neighborhood. StoneMillBakers

How sad that there are so few good outlets for something as basic a bread. Our food supply in the USA is horrible. We eat mostly chemicals, fat and sugar - in that order.

(I know I am off topic - but not really) - remember when yolks were dark orange instead af a pale, pale yellow - and they had a taste?

Sounds gross. Now I'm curious - what did they taste like?

HaHaHa. They tasted like eggs! I had even forgotten. Now I will gladly pay $3 or more for real eggs. I don't know how to describe it to someone who has only tasted the product of perpetually-caged, hen-type creatures, prematurely matured through hormones, induced to produce more than the natural output of eggs, through the miracle of chemicals. That's the real gross.

It's like the bread debate. To someone raised on packaged bread, the real thing is a shocker that actually has a taste that can't be duplicated with sugar and chemicals.

That's why people from out of the country are horrified.

Sadly, there is hardly a day that goes by that I don't think about the same thing.

For example, yesterday I was in Panera Bread on San Felipe. I ordered two croissants and the 16 year old cashier couldn't find how to charge a "plain" croissant on the register because he didn't know it was a pastry! Unbelievable!!

It's often amazing to my wife and I what passes for edible food here and in many parts of the US. My favorite was a restaurant in Lake Dallas called the Duck Inn who served potato chip chicken. While it was surprisingly tasty my favorite thing about the restaurant were the tshirts where the motto "Duck in Waddle Out" was printed. This motto could be applicable to so many places around here it's mind boggling!

It is a shame and it's very hard here in the US to eat real food- bread being just one of the products that is generally very poor.

What I've done is changed my eating patterns, I don't look for european substitute foods anymore. I do my best to eat local produce and enjoy the great unprocessed foods we can find here in Houston. Fiesta is your friend!

Also - Georgia's on I-10 between Eldridge and Dairy Ashford. More farmer's markets would also be nice.

The processed foods in the grocery stores is the worst crap.
