Those median incomes are including all the apartments and townhouses in Memorial. The HOUSES in the Villages (Bunker Hill, Hedwig, Piney Point, Hunter's Creek) start at 800k..so um, if you can figure out how to pay for the house,insurance and taxes on 170k ( not to mention everything else) let me know the secret.
Western Memorial it can be done. But you looking at older and 3000 sf and less., and it will be west of Dairy Ashford for the most part.
150k a year puts you in a 400k house max. But that max price leaves such little wiggle room, I don't know why people do that to themselves. Those above Memorial neighborhoods are slim pickings,bad locations, in that price range..or in the Villages case, non-existant. That's why most people are saying BURBS in here if the public schools are wanted K-12.
What if he has 400k cash? He sure can buy 800k house.

I was responding to the people saying that an income of 150K would put you way out in the burbs, when that type of INCOME is more than adequate for many areas within the beltway.
I for one would not move to a city and by a house right away anyway. I would stay in a condo/apartment for at least 6 months and see what areas suit me. There is not one single area in Houston where 12,500 a month does not get you a condo/apartment for lease.
Again reread my post. I said the most exclusive neighbourhood were the village and they are in the 170 range, so 150 would get you almost anywhere in Houston. I think I even mentioned that Piney point was just about the most expensive place in Texas. No time did I suggest the villages. Just used it as a ceiling for how high median income go in Houston
Yeah, but what EA is saying is that that median income is actually skewed by apartment dwellers, and that it is actually higher for homeowners, which the OP would mostly likely be. Her point is valid; one has to be careful when considering any stats relating to Houston, as they can be misleading.

Well, now you're totally making up assumptions of a one time poster. But sure than can be done...with the knowledge that 1/3 the 150,000 pre-tax income will go to property tax, mortgage and insurance just for the house. ICK!
But yes median income is very misleading in all those studies. Owning a house in certain areas can take 2-3x's the median income. And yes I was reading into it that the OP wanted buy a home. With a SAHM and 3 kids, most would.

I agree median income is misleading. It is the mortgage a person can borrow is 2-4 times the income. It has nothing to do with the house price. I know a couple bought 1.2 million house. Their income is 200k. Because they have made so much money on their first house, they can put a large down payment. You see 200k income people can live in a million dollar house easily.

Yep can be done. But they aren't going to do much more than living in that million dollar house. Even if you bought it outright with cash. Property tax,insurance, utilties and maintance is the monster some people forget. 4 times income? That would be insane these days to do that to yourself. Banks are dumb.

lol, you are missing the exact same thing that EA missed. I never suggest the villages. I gave it as the higher end. And to be honest there are not a whole lot of apartments in the Piney Point Area.
Median incomes may be screwed in areas, but still that is one hell of a screw to not live comfortable on 150K in just about anywhere in Houston. And besides why would the median be screwed for The Memorial Villages and not for others. I am not saying that there are not many expensive homes there (there are many) but that still doesn't not escape the fact that the median income for that area is 170K. BUt that is going way off track. Those were a reference and point is that with that income he doesn't have to live out in the boonies
Heck if he is moving his family for work, chances are he will be selling his old house and using that as a down payment for the next one.

No where in the OP post does it give a price point for housing.
No where does it say exactly where the job is. Houston as everyone here knows is HUGE! Yes, the job could be located downtown or the job could be located out west near Lakeside country club or south near Hobby airport.
Where the job is actually located is necessary to help find a good house in a good school district for the family.
And yes, I believe that 150k annual salary is fine for the houston area.
Like people have mentioned, you'll be more than fine. If you can put up with a 40 or so minute commute to downtown you can get a nice 3000 square foot house for around 200k. A lot of the suburbs are filled with stay at home moms, so your wife should be able to find plenty of friends. Houston isn't the best place to visit, and it's not a great place for single people (compared to other large cities), but it is arguably the best 'big city' in the country for a family.

Lets not bait people into posting zillions of rankings that show Houston among the top ten cities for singles (there are many), the op is not single, so why even bring that up? Those things are subjective and should be left for other threads
