I'm looking for a finance job & am relocating to either Houston or Atlanta. I'm originally from the midwest. I'm hoping to find a job within 6 months of arriving but have never lived in either city & am looking for insights on the job markets in both cities and the benefits & minuses of living in either city. I am aware that Houston can have very hot summers which is fine by me. I have read that Houston can have severe flooding which is something I have never seen. I'm wondering if the flooding is not such a big deal, or if it is a drawback of living in Houston. I'm also interested in the crime situation in both cities. Thank you in advance for any insights.

I think both will do you a great deal, but I will choose Houston because its cheaper and has a lot of opportunities. Atlanta's no sloucher, but its economy was hit bad compared to Houston's.

The only time you would see severe flooding in Houston would be if a tropical storm hit the area.

Thank you--I noticed on Zillow that while the home prices were higher in Atlanta than Houston, it seems like there's a whole lot for sale in Atlanta versus Houston. I thought that might be 1 indication of people who don't have work in Atlanta just trying to get out. Appreciate the tip & have a great afternoon.

Thank you-I saw the pictures from Tropical Storm Allison & I realize that Allison was out of the ordinary, but it occurs to me that any direct hit from a Hurricane could easily do the same damage as Allison even if the Hurricane was only a category 1. One of the places I saw online was in the 500 year floodplain although I researched & found out that in several states, 500 year floodplains have experienced severe flooding twice in the span of 30 years. I've never lived in a city prone to flooding so I'm really inexperienced with the whole idea. Thanks again for the response.

Thanks for that. Also, you can compare the two metro's unemployment rate to conclude why Atlanta has more homes that are on sale that Houston.

A friend of mine who is living there now told me he has to pull off the highway when it rains hard because the highways begin to flood quickly. It's something I'm not used to, although maybe my friend was making a big deal out of nothing. It also occurs to me that since Houston is so close to the Gulf, that even a category 1 Hurricane, if it was a direct hit, could easily flood the city. Maybe it's because I've never lived in a Hurricane prone area or in a floodplain but it's something I'm interested in learning more about especially from people who were in Houston during Tropical Storm Allison.
