Lighting bugs seen in Houston in July and even a few in late August along Terry Hershey Park (greenspace on north side of Buffalo Bayou between Beltway 8 and Highway 6).

Bugs seen between Wilcrest and Kirkwood.

These bugs, a feature of my childhood, have seemed invisible to view but are important to the newcomers into life. It should be noted that fire fly festivals still exist in Japan.

Here, mosquito spraying and city lights may have kept the critters from triving, I think.

Its good to know that the spray trucks don't travel along the bayou.

I used to see them all the time when I first moved to Houston as a teenager in the early 80s. I don't see them much anymore, but now and again I see them around my home in Katy.

I was going to start a thread about this when I saw one in our backyard last month - obviously forgot. I didn't think Houston had lightning bugs so I was pretty excited at the prospect of being able to show them to my kids someday.

They come down the street about three times a week, on the Quail Path a few times I've seen the mini trucks after heavy rains. Our street runs along the bayou. But, that said, when the trucks are gone the bugs do drift in from the bayou.

Back in the 90's, a friend was house-sitting for a park ranger at that area north of Lumberton. I forget the name of the park. He took us into the woods at night, and there was a big huge ball of fireflies blinking in the darkness. Looked like little fairies. I've only seen a handful since then. They used to be common when I was a kid.

I haven't seen them in many years. I always loved them. I hope they keep living and doing OK in some areas.

Like Horned Toads, I love both!
