Just wondering if it's worth my while to switch to a lower rate provider, now that my contract's about to expire.

None. I've switched from TXU to Reliant to Ambit and back again with no fees. Why do you assume there has to be a fee?

None, and I have saved a lot of money switching away from that pack of bandits at Reliant.

The only fees are explicit in the contract - usually an early termination fee, although some plans have a monthly charge. But I've never seen a fee just to switch.

There's no fee to switch.
Just let the company you want to switch to know when your current contract will end.
Also make sure your current company does not auto-renew or put you on a month-to-month variable plan.
That's about all there is to it.

I switched from Dynowatt To Spark even before the end of contract when we moved. Even though Dynowatt is a provider on our new address, they didnt charge a fee...they didnt even force us to continue with them in the new address until the contract ended..
That was a pleasant surprise.

I am thinking of switching to Gexa, how are their prices. Any other suggestions?

I used to have Gexa up until a couple of years ago.
At the time, I was on a variable plan (which was my mistake) but at the time I did not like the fact that you couldn't view your bills online and the online pay was not very advanced (you could only use Paypal).
Things may have changed since then, I'm not sure.
I also did not like the fact that they charged me a large deposit fee, even though I have good credit and had previously been a customer with them (with no late payments).
I use StarTex Power and have been very pleased with them.
Very low locked rates and you can view all your bills online.

The is no fee to switch, unless you want the switch to occur before your normal meter reading. If CenterPoint has to come out and make a special trip to read your meter because you want to switch by a certain day, for example, then CenterPoint charges a fee. Like say your meter was read yesterday and you don't want to go another month paying the higher fee. I think the charge is $14 but I'm not sure. If you just want the switch to occur the next time your meter is read, there is no fee. I think you need to order the switch at least a week or two before your meter reading to make sure it happens at the next reading. If you call CenterPoint, they will give you an estimate as to the next time your meter will be read.

P.S. I use Spark Energy and so far so good.
