Being from Sugar Land (Clements '02) and as an adult, regularly mingle in The Woodlands and Conroe, I would say no. To be honest, I consider some parts of Sugar Land more of what you're talking about.

Also, being from an upper middle class family that doesn't engage in ANY conspicuous consumption, (For instance my dad, a Halliburton researcher, takes the van-pool during the week to/from SL/to Hal.'s North Belt office and drives a Honda Element on the weekend), I'm personally very aware that there are many upper-class folks that DON'T act elitist or show off. i.e. Millionaire Next Door-types.

i can be pretty pretentious and short of 1 crazy episode in the woodlands i don't get that feeling from there. you can find crazy people all over the world. the feeling of isolation and exclusion in the suburbs maybe helps that along, but most if not all the people there are families. from my experience parents dont have enough time to be d**** when they have kids running around

To be honest, I call BS and think it's just another illustration of how you have some ax to grind with SL for some unknown and probably irrational reason.

Anyway, I think this whole thread is silly. None of the suburbs are this way... suburban Houston is nothing like, say, northern VA. If there are any parts of Houston where you'd want to find this type, you may find a few in town like Memorial, River Oaks, etc. You know the type... feels the constant need to boast to about something they probably didn't earn themselves anyway (born with it), poo-poo on areas of town not theirs (especially the dreaded suburbs), etc. But then again this is more the sad type of person they are, rather than the location of the ground their house is sitting on.

It depends on who you meet though. Since you are of Caucasian descent then you should not have any issues.

Nope, not unless you have a pattern of ranting on and bashing a particular place to the point of annoyance, here and elsewhere online.

However, I disagree that you won't find this in any of Houston's suburbs. I've seen it while living in both The Woodlands and Sienna Plantation. The snottiness and elitism I've seen haven't been from those that are actually wealthy, though. In my experience, it's coming from those who would like everyone to think they are snotty & elitist because they live in a certain area and therefore THINK they are part of the elite.

That being said, we know wonderful people in both areas and given specific circumstances, both are great choices.

Say what you want, but that's really my honest-to-goodness opinion. I really don't have an axe-to-grind.

Apparently, I'm not the only person who has the same views about SL vs. TW. And bear in mind I originally said SOME parts of SL. I didn't say the entire town, which is about 85K plus people and 30+ square miles. I am fully aware there are pockets of the city that aren't as what I would call "elitist," particularly parts of old Sugar Land. Sugar Land was originally a blue-collar factory town when it started back in the day, so that's one part of it's heritage I feel that it should highlight and be proud of.

I also highlighted the fact that there are some in SL and other burbs (i.e. like my own folks) who don't act elitist or "show off" via conspicuous consumption and I give those people in SL and other suburbs kudos.

I really do think The Woodlands, over all, has less of an elitist atmosphere than SL.

I know I rag on Sugar Land a lot, but to be honest, I'm not a fan of most facets of suburban life and suburbs in general. It's not just exclusive to Sugar Land. However, if given a choice between The Woodlands and Sugar Land, I would pick The Woodlands.
