What you've heard here are a dozen people who think Houston is different enough from LA/Vegas/Miami that there is a reason none of the dozens of clubs are like the one you mentioned -- it isn't a novel idea, it just doesn't work here because we're not a frivolous city, but I guess you hear what you want to hear.
That's why it's not supposed to be for mainstream. A succesful club like Mokai in South Beach holds ~200 people. Can a city of 5+ milion people like Houston not sustain a market of 200 people?

Don't you find it funny that all of these rich people did not come up with this idea before? BEFORE the recession and the housing market crash? Do they not travel as well?

Of course Houston has plenty of rich people...they walk around in worn out jeans and t-shirts. Different mentality here...real wealth doesn't flaunt it.

Most don't sell themselves as anything other than what they are - hip-hop clubs.

Well also remember he's looking to attract European expats residing in Houston as well.

Exactly. Recently I was reading that thousands of people from Mexico and Central America travel to Houston each year to shop at the Galleria. Do they have money to spend? Obviously! Do they probably enjoy hip hop and American style bars? Of course not!

The high prices should be indication enough.

Not true. Plenty of people driving BMWs, Mercedes, etc and spending lots of money at fancy restaurants.

What stupid club owner would turn a walking million dollar advertisement away? Those guys probably don't even go to clubs for free...every club you see them in...they are probably paid to be there.

Nothing is what it seems. Half of those clubs they probably would not be able to get into without their name/status. "Pretentious" people with cash would stop frequenting those clubs if it became "too dark" thus... an invisible quota is put in place.
