I am not familiar with this part of the country. Could someone suggest safe and nice calm places to stay overnight on my way there. This is a relaxed trip so I could make one or two overnight stops. Thank you all.

Yes, I'm thinking it's an easy day drive. I've driven from Atlanta to Dallas before in under 16 hours and Birmingham to Houston has to be a lot shorter trip than that.

I drive it all of the time, my sister, and now my dad live there. I do it in 10 or 10 1/2 more likely.

You can go through either Jackson or Hattiesburg on the 2 routes available. Either place is a good overnight stop.

When the in laws come to town from GA they stop over in Biloxi for a little fun and free food. They always are given a free room and food there from one of the hotels.

I would stop in Baton Rouge and go see a plantation or too around there. Oak Alley?

Anyway, Biloxi is nasty. You could do New Orleans. I haven't been back since Katrina, but if you pull into the French Quarter before dark I think you should have a great time all night.

I've driven that route few times. If I leave in the afternoon, I just drive as far as I can and then stop by one of the hotels and sleep there. That drive is boring - it's just woods for miles on.

It's an easy one day drive, if you can drive all day. I've done it several times. If not, stop in New Orleans for some food & fun. Or Biloxi, which is not as bad as EA says (IMHO). But NO is better.

No way do you need to make more than a one-night stand out of this drive, unless you want to play tourist.

When we drove to Houston from Baltimore, MD we stopped in Birmingham for the night to rest and we stayed at the Residence Inn. You will probably be able to find a cheaper hotel; we just stayed there because we had our pets with us and they allow pets (with a deposit). I remember doing a google search looking for a hotel in Birmingham there were a plethora of options. From Birmingham to Houston is around 10 hours and totally doable in a day driving strait through.
