I would be wary of anything in Southeast Houston inside Beltway 8; I'll put it that way.
Isn't the northside inside the beltway supposed to be really bad as well?

I currently live in Cleveland, but used to like in Humble/Atascocita and it is nice, low crime, pretty safe shopping, pretty good schools, etc. I also have friends/family that live in the Woodlands, Conroe, Tomball, Spring, Cy-Fair, and they all have their little imperfections, but nothing scary or dangerous. Just like with anywhere you go, it is always safe and smart to be aware of your surroundings. Crazy things happen all the time, to all sorts of people, all over the place.
Your brother is a cop... his job is to see bad things. In any case, Houston is safer than my former Las Vegas home.

It's funny. I am on the Philly forums from time to time and I see the exact same questions about safety. I guess crime is a part of every big city. Man, what a revelation!
Funny thing, crime is in the suburbs too. I grew up in Spring and went to Klein High School. I saw drugs go in and out of that school. They just know how to mask it. Heck, at least the city is up front with how stuff is going down.
Its just that no one gets killed in the burbs.

Hmm, we had our string of deaths in Clear Lake.

Andrea Yates killed her 5 kids. This one dude shot up his boss at NASA and then himself, which turned our neighborhood into a media circus for a day. That dentist was found to be screwing his mistress and got ran over by his wife in her big-body-Benz. And then there was some high school/college age double murder.

I guess these were all inside jobs, not random acts of violence. You still have to play it safe and choose your friends wisely. Our area and ALL the burbs are full of people on anti-depressants, sleeping pills and other Drugs of Corporate America. They can turn laid-back individuals into monsters in the blink of an eye.

I think Houston is a very safe city. There are very few neighborhoods I am afraid of.

Plenty of people get killed in the burbs. Their kids get snatched and their houses get robbed.

Good Lord!!! This must be incorrect . . . unless you mean to tell me that . . . . . . crime happens everywhere?

Well I'll take my chances. 77004 for me, just as soon as I win the lottery and can afford a house in Houston and a house in Philly.

A lot of murders are that way.

Even those that seem random can have a story behind them....a bad debt being "collected," estranged former loved one, gang/drug dealer territory disputes.
