Default What sports do you guys get up to?

I'm moving to Houston early next year from Aberdeen, UK. The thing that worries me the most is that my normal sports of choice aren't really an option there (mountain biking, surfing, windsurfing).

I'm an outdoors kind of guy and like my sport to give me a bit of a thrill - so what do you guys do in the way of sport that can fill the void?

I'm thinking triathlon at the moment.....

Wow, you're an intrepid soul -- surfing in the North Sea?!? Even though it's a hot, muggy 90 degrees outside today, I got shivers just thinking about that! I'm not sure what sport will give you the thrill you seek, but I can guarantee you'll be doing it in much warmer weather. Have you ever considered bull riding?

Plenty of mountain biking options in the greater houston area: GHORBA > Trail Conditions 2009

Here's a kiteboarding/surfing shop in Kemah... so I imagine windsurfing is equally big: XLKITES Kiteboarding Lessons and Gear

A few hours south in Corpus Christi wind surfing is popular. We have decent trail riding here, no moutains to speak of.

You can still mountain bike albeit without the mountains - there are some good trails around. How about Kayaking or Sky Diving - hubby did his first sky dive last year for his 40th.

Hows the weather back home - I hear you had some snow ?

With you coming from the UK. I'm thinking the biggest sport for you, at least for a while, is going to be getting adapted to our weather. I'm 60+ born and raised here and I'm still working on it.

In my opinion those aren't sports. Those are recreational activites/excercising. As a true blooded American myself. Football, basketball, hockey, baseball, lacrosse..etc...now those are sports.

In the immortal words of Kenny Powers, from HBO's Eastbound and Down when asked about triathalons: "I play real sports, I'm not trying to be the best at excercising"

Plenty of biking options here if you're willing to drive 30-45 minutes. You could also consider road biking if our trails don't suit your taste. Go down to Galveston and you've got your standard beach stuff.

My friends and I play Ultimate Frisbee and Flag Football every Saturday and pick-up basketball every Tuesday. I know people who train for marathons and people who love paintball.

Also, you could try Gator-Wrestling. Or rodeo sports -- I hear them clowns make good money!

road biking would probably be better. houston is very flat and paved

for surfing...i always think it's really laughable when you see people trying to surf in galveston. it's even more laughable that they have a surf shop there. the tide is not fit for surfing whatsoever. it's like trying to snowboard on westheimer.

I work outside all day, that's what fills my outdoorsy void.
