What's the historical reason for the street numbering? What happened to streets 1-3? It starts at 4th street and ends at 45th?

Just wondering ...

Default Hmmm...

As is with most old cities, they started small, and as they grew, they assigned either letters, or numbers to the streets. That would be my guess anyway. Look at New York's streets!

Old Houston Maps | Houstorian

This has some cool maps. Looks like street numbers came in in early 1900s.

That was Houston Heights, which was once its own municipality. I believed they used the number system for additional streets for a time even after Houston Heights was absorbed into Houston. It's the same reason why you will see numbered/lettered streets in parts of the East End, the former Harrisburg.
