They are going to add a Paifang. In an effort to start revitalizing the Old Chinatown.

Those not familiar with a Paifang, it is the Chinese style gateway into the Chinatown area. You normally see it a lot in other Chinatowns. Houston's New Chinatown has one near the Jade Buddha Temple but they are going to get it done for the Old Downtown Chinatown too.

wouldn't it be nice it more Ethnic towns developed in EaDo??


Little Saigon in Midtown is almost completely gone, but it would be sweet if another would be developed in EaDo instead of being absorbed into new chinatown.

I kinda don't like how the other Ethnic areas are mainly outside the loop.

I Guatemalan friend told me they have a small town in the mission bend area. Mission bend itself is rich in Nigerian areas, there are some Caribbean areas near Beechnut (I believe), the Mahatma Ghandi area near Hillcroft........ all of that would look so nice spread out within the loop

Very cool stuff for the east side. One thing 77003 and 77023 are missing is good retail. Hopefully once a few good projects come up, the masses will follow.

I whole heartedly agree with this. There are SO many empty lots, old buildings and open store space for development to enter. I live in 77003 in a newer townhouse and I actually like the area. It's quiet (quieter than the Washington corridor) and isn't quite as busy as Midtown or Washington. What frustrates me is that it has the bones to become a really neat neighborhood but it's missing key ingredients.

The nearest grocery story (Combat Kroger) is off of Cullen. It's old and a little janky. The janky-ness doesn't bother me except that it doesn't have a pharmacy or NEAR the level of selection as some of the other Krogers.

I have no idea where the nearest pharmacy is (it sure isn't in the Combat Kroger). I usually end up going to the CVS in midtown off of W.Grey. I've heard there's one off of Navigation somewhere but I'm still a little weary of that area of town past night.

Restaurants/Cafes: There are several around those parts (namely Mexican and Burger joints) but there's NO Starbucks or Subway or anything of that nature.

Sorry to rant, I just wish other people would see how valuable this part of town is becoming. If franchise owners/developers were smart, they'd start their projects NOW before the new stadium drives up lot prices...

But that's exactly what they are doing. Houston has had a lot of retail proposals more than anything else I can name in the recent 5 years or so.

Americas Plaza itself will integrate street level retail options. I think it's a great plan and there is a lot of stuff going on for this too. I mean one step at a time and its definitely getting there at a very good pace. In 5 years, no one will recognize this area at all.

I think so. It really makes no sense that all that space in EaDo (Oh I can't believe I am using that name, I hate it) continues to sit. Well, will continue to sit after the economy picks back up. It is right on top of downtown, right by UH, Eastwood on the other side continues to improve, and then it will also have the metro rail.
