Hey guys, I am new to this and this is my first thread. I am, today, finishing my last GIS course in Community College. I would have gone for a 4 year degree but in Houston, no university offers that. So, that being said, I also have to include the fact that I am an international student. I speak Spanish and English, just like anyone else, but I can actually speak Spanish properly and write and read perfectly. The fact that I am an international student means that I can only get internships or work in a field related job and I am finding it pretty hard to come up across one of those. I am in the process of becoming a green card holder but that could take up to 5 years or longer. I am 23 years old and I just want to move on with my life.

Your best bet is going to be networking. I'd start looking for any conferences or events that your field holds and make it your top priority to attend. If your resume is weak, sending it into a company is going to be a black hole -- you need to find someone who you can impress personally to make anything happen.

The county govts. uses GIS to keep up with their various maps such as the property maps for tax purposes. You might check wanted ads for counties in S. Texas where bilingual would be a selling point.

That is likely a dead end. County GIS systems are generally not too sophisticated and they use outside firms to do the heavy lifting. Also, it isn't cost effective to spread your search so thin that you would relocate far away from a strong economy (Houston) for a job without any upward mobility and with low pay. Rural county jobs pay very little and there is no competition that will want your services.
Also, county jobs generally go to locals and it seems his effort could be better spent elsewhere.
