Hello Forum,
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of local art classes / artists that teach. Google searches mostly yield local art schools, and I'm more interested in a small, non-formal setting.

PS: I'm not 100% sure what I want to try... oils / watercolors / pencils. I don't know that I have any talent, per se, but I'd love to try

I'm a visual artist who works in several media and I've taught at every level from elementary school through college -- not teaching now, however.

A lot of artists who teach classes outside of a recognized institution tend to teach only their own style of work, rather than encouraging students to see, think and work creatively. In other words, their students more or less copy what the teacher does and make nice, decorative pictures that elicit "ooohs" and "aaahs" from friends and family.

My suggestion is to see what classes are available at The Art League of Houston, The Glassell School of MFAH, plus any non-credit courses at our area's community colleges. These studio groups are usually more relaxed than those of credit courses, plus students benefit enormously just from being around others who are working on similar assignments.

If you are near Clear Lake, try the Arts Alliance. They offer all of what you are looking for.

As said above - also try community college non-credit courses. I've taken non-credit music and loved it.

If near Sugar Land, inquire here:

Sugar Land Area Artists-Welcome Page

My mother is actually one of the artists there.
