What do you all think is an average airfare from the NYC area (EWR, JFK or LGA in order of preference) to Houston?

Some relatives are planning to visit in the early part of March and the fares coming up are $450. I've never paid that much for my parents' tickets - even during the holiday season.

Just wondering what you think so I have a better idea on how to advise my cousin.

Thanks!

Our daughter lives in NYC (Queens, near LGA), so we're pretty familiar with how airfares have changed over the many years. $450 for a direct flight isn't bad (I paid $500, including fees and taxes) for her to come home just a few weeks ago. But not long ago I paid half that for a direct flight. Elnina said prices change daily. They actually change constantly during the day, based on a huge variety of factors. No question that connecting flights save you money. The tradeoff is hassle and time. LGA is hands down the easiest airport to use, but it may or may not be convenient for you. It's the only one we use for personal travel, but I've used EWR and JFK many times for business travel (depending on my destination). I'm not a fan of either.

That seems reasonable for a direct flight, I go to Newark 3x a year. Maybe Southwest or another carrier with stopovers may be cheaper as El Nina mentioned.

My daughter also is in NYC. That is about what we paid at Christmas. Somebody is having a good fare around Valentines from NYC to Austin. Less than $100. I told her to come at Valentines instead of Christmas. After she started crying, we bought the tickets.

Jet Blue can get get you from NYC to Hou for $238 from Mar 2 to Mar 9. My dad and family lives in NYC and few years ago it was $250 on avg for round trip, this past xmas using southwest was about $900 but you also get two bags, and when you fly with a toddler a lot of stuff needs to be packed.
Now a days im only flying home once a year as opposed to 2-3 times a year.

Good luck!

I fly back and forth a lot. Check US air out of newark. I pick up nonstop round trip for around 200$. Would be worth the path ride. Make sure you book 2 to 3 weeks prior to your flight or you will pay more sometimes a lot more.

That's high. I usually fly roundtrip between BOS and HOU/IAH for less than $400, so I would expect NYC to be less. Then again, people forget that Spring Break for most schools are in March. Also, I think you tend to get better prices with the bigger airports. I personally like KAYAK - Cheap Flights, Hotels, Airline Tickets, Cheap Tickets, Cheap Travel Deals - Compare Hundreds of Travel Sites At Once because you can see all airline fares. Tdhg566 is right as well. Prices can change many times during the day. I have found myself wondering where the fare I just clicked on 5 minutes ago went!

Southwest is beginning service to EWR in March. When we go visit my wife's family we usually fly JetBlue nonstop to JFK and it is in the mid $300-s.

Under $300 can usu be had if you shop around and wait for right timing. That's direct flight (last time i checked, direct was cheaper than stop overs)
