This is where I meant to say this: "Maybe this area can be the San Marcos of Houston."

San Marcos sits within a drive of two large metropolitan areas.

Where they are talking about putting these developments is a dead end, both literally and figuratively on many levels.

If anything, can they at least put this in Mall of the Mainland, put a little money back into the building and have it not be a large hulking mass of abandonment? This is purely rhetorical because I know what the answer is.

Just curious; what do you really mean by the term "dead end?" I know that it leads to an ocean.

Nobody just passes through Galveston County, being half surrounded by water. You are there to be there, whatever that reason is. Think of it as a gigantic cul-de-sac with two smaller ones branching out from there, one goes to the island, one goes to Texas City. That's the physical sense of "dead end."

The figurative sense is that the county is borderline irrelevant economically, well beyond the point of being saved with another retail development or two. It's a death trap for these developments. Galveston lost its mall in the 1980s. The two or three dozen people left on the island with money to spend don't need outlet malls. They buy the real thing. Then on the mainland, the mall which I mentioned was opened not quite 20 years ago, has empty storefronts painted as open ones (I couldn't make this up). About half of old Texas City - 5-6 miles east of 45 - looks like a slice of Gary, Indiana or some other Rust Belt town.

It's not San Marcos. Not by a long shot. Rather than being a place crawling with broke college kids who might work or shop in these places, this is a place you get out of the first chance you get unless your aspirations in life are working at a refinery that a bunch of lawyers are basically trying to get shut down.

I didn't know it was on that level. Goodness. Where do you think these outlet malls would be better off?

No, San Marcos is a college town and situated between Two major Texas cities. There can be no such thing as a "San Marcos of Houston".

I live in Dallas and I heard that Dallas is building a brand new galleria thats gonna be bigger than Houston's, and also come with a aquarium & Underwater zoo, bigger ice rink, and a 4 seasons hotel. Also, the outside will have a 10 acre fountain pond with dancing fountains and other retail and residental buidings surrounding it. This will be a good thing for Dallas.
