Default social security numbers / bank accounts

Hey guys

I'm due to arrive into Houston at end of month.
Can I ask regarding social security numbers and how long they normal take? The 2 ex pats in my company that have been to US seem to have different opinions?
One filled his landing card in wrong and took him 4 months to get his, the other took about 2/3 weeks...
Do they post it automatically and if so what address do you fill in on your landing card - hotel or my business address ( i will be looking for apartment when i arrive).

Second question is can I open a bank account without a SSN? again I have been told yes with back up from my company and no, not possible?

all advice greatly appreciated!

thanks

Illegals open bank accounts, establish credit cards, buy cars, and houses all the time with out SS numbers.

So I'm sure you can't =p.

Seriously, my father-in-law's mother recently applied for a SS card, I think she got it in about a month. I suppose it varies though.

My wife was allowed to open bank account when she was on student visa and had no SS #. She had to fill out some form for foreigners having bank account in the US - I can't recall what it was as this happened 5 years ago. It was at Compass Bank (now BBVA Compass).

is this a cool story bro?

We were told not to apply for our ssn's until 10 - 14 days after arrival because if you are not 'in the system' it will take longer to get the cards. We waited, applied in person and received our cards a couple of weeks later. Chase were able to open our bank account prior to us receiving our ssn numbers.

Hey ChocolateBabz,

thats great thanks.

Having not been to US before and arriving 'fresh of the boat' as such, do they infrom you whether you are in the system or not etc?

did the bank ask fro any particular back up to open the account as such? rental agreement, proof of a guarantor / letter from work in US etc?

thanks
