Moving from Oregon
Hello all,
My wife and I are moving to Houston in the next week, we just sold our house in Oregon. I am working over in Piney Point Village but cannot afford the housing there. Trying to keep things in the 95k to 105k price range with a decent commute and nice neighborhood, I will be in a bit of a culture shock moving from a town of 12,000 and my wife is from the Beaumont area. Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks,
bubba

To stay within your price range and get something decent, you're going to definitely have to commute. How far are you willing to live from your job, or should I say, how much time do you want to spend in your car going from work to home and vice versa?

I would like to stay within 30 min, I work really odd hrs at times and my wife could end up working down in the theatre district... Yeah we are all kinda complicated

You are probably better off looking at renting, at least for now - and you don't really have to pay all that much. I'm paying less in rent per year than what some homeowners are paying in property taxes.
Renting is just about the only way you're going to live within 30 minutes of where you work.

Getting close in for that price range will entail a transitional neighborhood. So you have to be able to deal with that. There are, however, a lot of opportunities in areas that have their share of sketchy factor now, but if you are willing to get involved in the community to try to help it improve and hold on for awhile, you can ride a gentrification wave. You will just have to catch that wave early in order to get in somewhere for $100k range.

$95K to $105K would have to be pretty far out in the exburbs or small condo close to work. Best best is to be as close to work as you can afford.

We are not totally opposed to the condo thing, thanks everyone for being so helpful and friendly. We don't have alot of furniture or stuff so it's not like we need anything huge. We have been comfortable in 1100sqft for the last two years.

We just moved here from Oregon in October. So far, we have been getting way more rain here then we ever got living in Portland. Enjoy!
Welcome to Houston.

This rain is abnormal. It's like spring never ended, except it's hot like summer the few days the clouds and rain aren't here.
Houston averages a little over 47 inches of rain a year...we're at 30-something already for '07.
