From Hutto to Houston is 2 1/2 hrs. Hutto is just North of Austin. It'd probably be about the same distance from San Marcos to Houston. At least, no more than 3. When I lived in Houston, we used to go to the outlets in San Marcos as a day trip. It's worth it. There are very good stores there, so it's worth the drive.

I've never been, but my MIL and nieces have (they live in Katy). They like it, but say it is pretty big and takes a while to walk through. The only complaints I ever heard about it were before it was built. I think they had to drain a wetland or something to put it up. I remember there was a little fussing about that. I didn't mean that to sound glib, as I wasn't too happy about it either.

Katy Mills is the same ole, same ole. Pretty dark and dingy inside.
But definitely make the trip for the Saks and Neiman's outlets. Good selections at both of boutique denim, and handbags/accesories-- I have found great buys on last-season Fendi and Kooba. At Saks Off Fifth, get on their mailing list and you will be rewarded with the occasional 30%-off- anything-postcard, which helps make a pair of unnecesary and very expenisve expensive shoes OK!

I'd rather go to West Oaks Mall.

These may all be good places, but the only luxury place is the Galleria and Uptown vicinity.

They're building an outlet mall out at Fairfield in Cypress. It's there on 290. I don't know when it'll open though. Probably summer '08.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Harwin. Why go luxury shopping when you can go faux luxury shopping?
