Honestly, if you know how to shoot a gun this is all you need for personal home defense:

I wish it was that easy. Firing a gun outside your house (i.e. in the frontyard, backyard, etc.) may cause a number of lawsuits from the defendant (questionable defense), the neighbors (damage of property, etc.) and probably the State/County (mishandling of firearms, not sure what it's properly called).

Now, when firing inside our sheetrock/hardiplank sided "cardboard" houses, there is a high chance the projectile will go right through and end up somewhere outside the house. Maybe in your neighbors car or a house, at best. I hope not in someones body. :-(

So IMO, a gun is a very last resort, but still not the best solution.

or you can use this:

Amazon.com: Master Lock 265DCCSEN Dual-Function Security Bar: Home Improvement

It's about $20 bucks and will help the door resist kicking.

Thus the words that many eat with a side of crow when they didn't shoot the basquards inside the home and ask questions later. You'll regret not having capped the SOB. First deterrent is always the best, so go for the gusto. If you're in my house, I own your a$$.

Just sayin'...

Nothing will deter thieves more than a very obviously placed, but out of reach security camera.

I've got several in my house, that are watchable from any TV in the house, as well as any device with internet access. I love being able to check on my home throughout the day.

Same here, CCTV system/recorder locked in a very safe place in the house. Enough HD space to record for 12 months straight. This is just the view of 4 cameras out of 12. Motion sensors enabled as well in each camera
