Default Need a good high school in Katy, Texas

We are moving to Katy, Texas this summer and need a good high school for my daughter who will be starting 10th grade. We are currently out in The Woodlands and kids tend to be snobby and bully a lot.

I have heard that some Katy high schools are similar (Cinco and 7 Lakes), but are less snobby in other areas like (Taylor, Mayde Creek).

Is this true? Can someone recommend a good high school? Thanks for the help.

Are your kids into sports and specifically football? Because if this is the case, you want Katy High School.

Katy High School is a great educational center, as well as displaying a strong sense of community. its Katy's oldest high school, and it the only school other then Cinco that id enroll my kids in.

Katy is less snobby then Cinco, but every bit as prestigious.

My sons both attended Taylor until we moved to OK while they were both in high school. It is a good school and the kids seemed to be quite nice and unpretentious. Neither of my kids were in the "cool crowd", but they still had lots of nice friends and they didn't have any problems with snobby people.

My daughter doesn't think the kids are snobby at 7 Lakes.

Katy High School does everything first class, and the answer to your question is yes. Their fine arts department is fantastic.

I will rank the high schools as i think they should be ranked in terms of extracurricular actives. Please realize that all the Katy high schools offer a good to great educational experience. The difference is in the activities and quality of those programs.

1. Katy High School
2. Cinco Ranch
3. Taylor
4. Mayde Creek
5. Seven Lakes
6. Mortan Ranch

In all honesty, i would not even consider another high school in that district. Not because they aren't good, but because Katy just has something special going on in those hallways. Kids get the type of up bringing we had when the world seem'ed a little bigger. Small town feel mostly. The level of support that Katy high school exhibits is just outstanding. Im a football fanatic, but when i go to a Katy football game....and i hear that band roaring, and there home side packed with 10,000 fans...their drill team present in massive numbers....when their choir sings the national anthem...and then their team goes out and destroys their opponent....you just get a good sense of what America should be like. a community that truly puts together everything to give their kids the best possible upbringing.

Nothing really even comes close to Katy HS in terms of parent support, and dedication to excellence...in terms of extracurricular activities.

if your kids or kid are active.....i recommend katy high.

I'm curious how you came up with those rankings... it looks more like the rankings for the past football season than for overall extracurricular activities in KISD schools. That having been said, I do agree that you get more of a hometown feel from Katy HS than from the others; and it's always fun to be a KHS student (or parent) when football season rolls around.

For what it's worth, Seven Lakes has an outstanding fine arts department. Their theater productions are nominated frequently for awards, including 11 nominations this year alone for Tommy Tune awards. Taylor also has a good theater department, I've heard.

the rankings were developed when i took the overall health of the extracurricular activities into play.

i used three criteria

1. parent involvement - I couldn't justify putting anyone ahead of Katy, and Cinco Ranch has shown over the last 5 years that it has really grown in that department since its opening over a decade ago. The other KISD schools don't really match up to par in terms of Parent involvement....and if you have raised a high school kid in clubs or extracurriculars....you know you don't want to be the one stuck with holding the bag all by yourself at the end of the day.

2. Competitive- I looked at KISD's HS success at UIL sanctioned events over the last 5 years. i wanted to see which schools made it into "ranked" categories.

3. Well Rounded success- I wanted to see which programs had the most success as a unit. i found that many schools did 1 or 2 things very well, but were either average or awful in the rest.

So because of the way i graded it, i came out with a list that resembled perhaps a district ranking.

Football is a great tool to unite a school, but its not the key. Schools all across Houston have great programs in football....but id NEVER send my kids there.

When i put katy at number 1 i did so because i found that in terms of Fine Arts, Athletics, and Academic standards they edged out Cinco Ranch....who is a very close second. Seven Lakes is on its way up, however it is still in growing stages....Good basketball, Soccer, and theater programs...but they don't have very good parent involvement.

LOL, I think HUM398 wants your daughter in shoulder pads and cleats.
Taylor High School, from what I've heard, has an excellent fine arts department.
