Katy ISD laying off 550 employees, says more expected to come | abc13.com

...And to think they just passed a $459.8 million bond , they should have just rezoned the entire district and scraped building new schools until the economy gets better.

Bond money is for schools and computers. Teachers are paid from different funding source.

Has nothing to do with bond money (which the voters in Katy ISD approved). Blame Rick Perry. Katy ISD isn't the only district in Texas laying off hundreds of teachers. All this while state judges and Perry's buddies are getting raises.

And we all know that because of the teacher's union, it's not necessarily going to be the worst 500 teachers. If it were, the quality of education probably wouldn't change one bit, but I'm sure it will be based purely on tenure.

Tomball ISD is hiring. I was at one of the schools yesterday. Talked to one of the AP's and asked if cuts were coming. She responded "NO, we're in good shape".

Not a lot of spots but anything helps right? Good luck KISD teachers.

I agree. Even though bond money can't be used for teachers' salaries, it makes no sense to build more schools that can't be staffed. If cuts need to be made, Frailey should start the process right there at Central Admin, followed by campus admin, and only then look at teachers. I've never seen such a top-heavy district as Katy ISD.

How long ago was it that the bond passed? All this teacher stuff is just coming out. Cuts are now just being realized due to Perry's policies and greediness.

So he's greedy for trying to reduce how much further the state goes into debt?

He's the reason why the state has gone into as much debt as it has. I'm actually kind of glad Perry got reelected. This way, he has to deal with his policies, instead of White getting elected and being blamed for the debt. Why are we cutting school teachers, but giving state judges and other state government officials raises? This, among other things, is why Perry needs to be gone after dealing with the mess HE made. Horrible governor.

There are no teacher's unions in Texas, only associations. And believe me, the associations have pretty much zero power when compared to the union.

And although you can argue that the bond/teacher pay are separate issues, the fact of the matter is education is a local issue. The blame should generally go towards your local school board.

You want to know what I find most ironic? HISD has been handling the situation thus far much better than Fort Bend and Katy. Think about that for a minute.
