The forum has a lot of posts about the "bad" bugs in Houston, the mosquitoes, the palmetto bugs, the fleas... just to name a few! But we have some cool and interesting bugs and animals too. A few days ago we noticed a "weird thing" on our poolside basketball hoop. Turns out it was a praying mantis egg sack. My husband made this cool video of the just hatched babies. Praying mantis are so interesting to watch and are considered beneficial because they eat a lot of "bad" bugs. Anyway, it's a really cool video shot in our back yard:

Cool video! I rarely see adults, and have never seen babies. Thanks for posting!

we have walking sticks and those bugs that look like leaves as well. the first time i saw a walking stick I was shocked and a little disgusted by how humongous it was. big enough you could look it in the face.

It's actually the female walking sticks that are so much bigger than the males. I think they're cool too.

We're lucky here in Houston to have a great climate for monarch butterflies/caterpillars too. I've seen posts on "monarch watch" boards where people were happy finding 1 or 2 caterpillars. I can raise them spring, summer and fall. There have already been monarchs in my back yard and the first generation has hatched. So far, I have 35 caterpillars! We also took some video of the monarchs. We got some absolutely amazing footage of one of the caterpillars forming it's chrysalis. I can post it when we're done with the editing. It's unreal!

I'd be interested to see the caterpillars posted up here. Never seen one forming a chrysalis. I kept a big silk spun cocoon in my room as a kid, and ended up with a pretty moth with about a 3 inch wingspan and eye spots on its wings.

Oh, they are so cute running around. No wings yet or too small to see? I need some good bugs for my yards & plants.

OK, as requested... here is the video of a monarch caterpillar forming its chrysalis. Absolutely amazing! Filmed by my husband in our house. It's for a UH class project but worth watching. The first part is speed up 2x then once the skin falls it's 8x. Total real time about 50 min.

I love these videos. The music choices are excellent with the footage. Kudos to your husband for these!
