Planning to retire to Houston area. Have heard a lot about Texas friendliness and hospitality, but would like to hear about personal experience from "outsiders" who have moved there.

I am from the UK and have always found Texans to be extremely friendly. For some reason they seem to be fascinated with my accent which I have never quite understood as it's nothing special. I have only ever had one unpleasant encounter which was quite few years ago and I was told to get back to where I came from. He was just a jerk who had had a couple of drinks. Obviously you don't like everyone you meet and vice versa but on the whole they are kind and generous and you couldn't find a nicer bunch.

There's the thing about Houston. The city has grown rapidly to the size that it is currently, due to the huge number of outsiders moving in through the years. Most of us are "outsiders" - so none of us are.

I love it here. I had to pick between Paris, Hong Kong and here. Well I am still here so that means I LOVE IT... Texas is the best place in the world... People friendliness reminds me of home...so I feel like home....

Moved here a year ago with my family and absolutely love it. People here are great. With that said, I guess it just depends on what you plan for retirement -- my plan is to live on 50 acres in the mountain with no neighbors!

Thanks for the reinforcing comments. Not looking forward to the moving process much, but very excited about being there.

I moved here before Christmas, not knowing anybody. A co-worker of mine that I barely talked to for 1/2 hr sent me an email with lot of local info. He talked to his wife. They took us out for lunch and bought Christmas gift for my 2 daughters. What a treat for us. We've been really good friends ever since.

Went to Houston in 2009 with my wife, and loved it!! Being from new york it took me about 2 days to de-compress, everyone was very nice and friendly. When we got back to New york. We didn't even get out of Newerk airport and I already got the finger from a cabbie... NY SUCKS! We are going back with all our kids this summer and plan on retiring in the Woodlands by the summer of 2013!! WE ARE SOOOO OUT OF NY!!

GOD BLESS TEXAS!
