Anyone have a map of the public housing projects/section 8/subisidized homes in Houston? Or can describe pretty well as much as they know? Maybe I will make a map if I get enough good input. This is for informational purposes only, please please please do not turn this into anything other than locations.

I have never heard about a map. The MLS system lists whether a rental house accepts section 8 (not many do).

The apartment locating site also lists them. There is a field for that, just as there is for pet-acceptance, short term lease options, etc. No map.

Don't know how you would get info on individual homes, but there is a list for actual housing projects at the HHA website. Home - Houston Housing Authority

Do you live in Houston or Texas?

Houston doesn't really have all that many government housing projects. Indigent households generally live in privately-operated apartment complexes that accept tenants who require Section 8 housing subsidies. (Not all apartment complexes do so because Section 8 tenants have a reputation - justified or not - for causing more than the usual wear-and-tear on rental housing).

There are two types of section 8. One is project based, meaning the entire building is section 8 and the tenant is bound to that building, and the other is tenant based, meaning the tenant has a portable voucher that can be used to rent any unit within the price limits and will accept the voucher payment. (Where I live) with tenant based section 8, market rate deposits, background checks, credit checks, and reference checks are the norm. These things are not required of project based section 8, causing some obvious differences in tenant quality.

Try searching gosection8.com You can enter a certain zipcode or just Houston and it will bring up a list of properties that accept tenant based section 8, with contact information.
