How does one go about finding out if there is lead in the paint in old apartments in Houston?

I don't think you need to worry about it. Apartments are supposed to comply with the new rules. I'm sure they don't want to be sued when a kid get sick from eating the wall.

They stopped using it over 30 years ago. It was an expensive paint, my guess is apartments back then didn't use it much because of that.

They used to paint our baby beds with the stuff - and most of us chewed on it. I guess that explains a lot.

Makes sense - we have so much housing that was built after they stopped using it.

I wouldn't rest peacefully with the idea that lead is only a concern in older homes. There's been a disturbing resurgence of lead showing up in the US. I'm not sure if it is an issue with paint, but since the whole "let's have China make everything for us" crap started more recently, lead has made a comeback in products entering the US. Folks really need to do their homework on a constant and regular basis. Nobody else is looking after us (especially the government regulatory agencies). It's unfortunately up to each of us. Sign of the times.

and even if an apartment is old enough to have a coat or 3 of lead paint on the walls, trim, windows, etc. .... it has most likely been painted over several times in the 30 + years since lead paint was last used.... it really only presents an issue if it is flaked or loose or airborne.... if it is sealed or covered, best to leave it be.....
