THANKS,
Sorry but I can't help you with Houston area taxes as I lived there last in the 1950s. However, here is a chart of Texas county property rates (presented in cents per $100 of tax appraisal) from 1991 to 2007. Texas Total County Property Tax Rates 1991 - 2007

Be aware this chart does not include municipal, school, hospital, bridge, vehicle and the many other property taxes that can add significantly to your tax bill. And before someone says Texas does not have a property tax on personal vehicles, I beg to differ. I have a home in one of the very few Texas counties that still has this atrocious tax.

The bad part about having such wide variation in county rates and taxes is the confusion it creates to newcomers. The good part is that newcomers can shun the counties run by the tax-and-spend types and select for counties with intelligent leadership. I am in that process right now.

Never say never. This past June I gave away a piece of property in east Texas appraised at $7,000 that I had offered for sale for $500 for several years. I have commercial property in west Texas that has been listed at the appraisal value for now over three years. Some may say I should contest these valuations. However, I try to pick my battles wisely and I would rather face an IRS office audit than fight with the Texas County tax office. Anyone who would raise taxes in economic times like these is someone without logic.

so the rate monthly would look something like this?

in Rhode island, we use per $1,000 and its yearly for the calculation.

Say, 99,000

990
x 0.39239
------------------
$388 month?

Get ready for Tax Shock when you get here. Since their is no state income tax they have to tax you somewhere. In addition to Property Tax, most areas outside of Houston have MUD taxes...not fun.

I wished that were the case, but unfortunately it's not. It can add significantly to your tax bill. Here's a link with good info. about MUDs. BTW, I have no relations with that Realtor.

I think it's about 15-20 miles out (in Sugar Land). It's a 25-30 minutes drive to the Galleria area during non-rush hour from where I'm at.
