Hello all,
I'm a student at UAB in Birmingham. My room mate and I will be traveling to from New Orleans to Houston then to Dallas. We have a few days to spend in the area and I was hoping I could get some information on where clean cheap hotels are in the city. We would like to be close to an area with things to see and do. Maybe in walking distance but we will have a car so we could drive to some sights.

We're also planning on going to the beach for at least one night while we are in the Houston area, so any info on a good area and hotel as well would be great.

We have never been to Texas so we are kind of lost.
Suggestions for things to do while we are there would be great too. We're on a budget - so the cheaper the better.

We will be there Sat-Mon next week.

There are many places on the Seawall to stay in galveston....Holiday Inn,The Commodore,LaQuinta. The seaweed is bad currently but they pick it up along the Seawall most of the time. Out west they leave for beach preservation.
In Houston I would visit the Museum District,Rice Village,Discovery Green and Enjoy some good TexMex at the original Ninfa's on Navigation.

get real Mexican food, not the flour tortilla velveeta type crap with chicken fajitas...you can get that stuff anywhere in America. Get some real Mexican food...on a CORN tortilla. Or maybe good pupusas at a Salvadorean place.

Or go to Bellaire blvd to try many different types of authentic Asian cuisine. Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, Singaporean, Japanese, etc.

Or Hillcroft for the Middle Eastern and Indian stuff. Some African too.

These are things that are hard to find in most other cities in America.

If you're planning going to the beach, Galveston, then, I'd suggest you stay toward the south side of I-45. It'd be around NASA and Keemah area. Keemah is by the bay. It's a family entertainment place with good restaurants. Nasa/Space Center Houston is a good place to visit too. You'd be about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs from Galveston (driving) and away from downtown traffic. If you like the beach, you may want to spend more than just 1 day in Galveston. If you do, you may like to visit Moody Gardens: Moody Gardens Galveston Texas | Amusement Theme Parks | Houston Attractions | Family & Group Vacation Idea TX

However, if you're more into city life, you'd be about 30-45 mins. driving to down town Houston from Nasa. More info: http://www.visithoustontexas.com/visitors/

For cheap accomodation check out the YMCA or hostels.com. You can get a bed in a dorm room very cheap.

Also try priceline.com. A Bid of 30-40$ will get you a decent hotel.

Its the same for Dallas.
