I am a young single professional who has just accepted a job in Houston, hopefully arriving the end of the year, or early 2012. I am super excited, but really need some advice!!! As I plan to rent an apartment, where would be good areas to look in, given I am a young single professional? Where are the best places to shop, meet people, etc?
Any help much appreciated

I think you will need to tell us what is your budget, housing expectations and in what part of Houston is your new job located

I am going to be looking for a 1-2 bedroom modern apartment, preferably furnished. I am unsure of my budget, as I don't know what is a reasonable rent to expect to pay. My job involved working at different sites every 3 months around the Houston area, but I will be based in Houston primarily, everyhwere I go to work will be a reasonable driving distance.
I would like to be somewhere quite central, or at least somewhere with lots to do and see.

Look in Midtown, Montrose, West Gray/S. Shepherd area, or the Heights

LOL, you're in for a shocker. Distance will be fine, commute time HELL NO.

I don't know what the weather is in NZ but bring plenty of sunscreen and OFF. Houston isn't the armpit of Texas for nothing,

Live somewhere central and close to the highways. Wher r the 3 locations you'll be stationed at? If you live in zips 77056 or 77027 for example, you could get to cypress, sugarland, pearland easily. Both zips are good places to live. Furnished apts are really expensive. With about 2mths furnished rent savings, you can furnish your own apt with basic furniture and sell them later. Expect unfurnished apts to be 1k-2k for a nice apt in good area. Add at least 1k-2k per month for furnishings.
