It's just an article in a local paper. There's nothing significant or overly important in it. Why elevate it to some ridiculous level that doesn't fit or make sense? Ignore and move on...

It is bitter- that's for sure. Perhaps a hint of jingoism.

Millenium Park is right by the lake, is in the middle of downtown Chicago and has an amazing bandshell. Discovery Green is in the middle of downtown, but downtown Houston has nothing on Downtown Chicago. The biggest issue I have with Discovery Green is the ugly cruise ship that seems to hover over the park.
Houston metro is a more versatile area than Chicago's.

We can mimic some of Chicago (sitting at Minuti Coffee or Bombay Pizzeria downtown does remind me a bit of Rush St).
We can mimic some of New Orleans (Heights, The Strand).
We can mimic some of SoCal (Rice Village and Post Square in Midtown give me some of that fix).
We can mimic some of Florida (obviously).
We can mimic some neo-Taipei or Hong Kong (the Dun Huang Center at night is simply amazing off Bellaire Blvd, the exciting neon and foot traffic, late night cafes and KTV clubs).
We can mimic some true Mayberry (Old Town Spring, Kemah Lighthouse District: Mayberry bar-crawl by the sea!).

And these all blend in a seemingly UNINTENTIONAL and organic way in the Houston diaspora...making it the very eccentric place that it is.

So all these Uptight Anal Urbanists need to get over it whenever Houston is compared to another large metro in a favorable way.

Don't forget the context of Discovery Green. It is close to to other urban park treasures like the magnificent Memorial Park and Hermann Park.

Downtown Houston's environs has close options.

When Univision came to Houston to do its live shows last year, Hermann Park was chosen.
