Hello we are moving to Houston in a few months. My husband wants to be somewhere where we can have a boat and be on the water. I looked at Seabrook

Budget is up to $550k, although if we can spend less that would be great. I know the issues with insurance, flooding and hurricane evacuations.

My main questions are:

- Lake Cove subdivision - is it nice, are there lots of kids around (elementary age) - are there things for kids to do in the area?

- Is it close to shopping (grocery and other shopping)

- how are the schools in Clear Lake, I've been researching them and some look lke they have gotten good ratings.

He works from home, so commute won't matter.

Thanks

I think so - to answer your title question.

The hurricane evacuations aren't that big of deal. Protecting the home if it is near (and especially facing) the water would be though. I'm not sure about Lake Cove. There is decent basic shopping (groceries, clothes - if Palais Royal is still there). There isn't a lot of major shopping there though. For that you'd have to cross over to nearby Kemah, or go west to Webster and/or the mall there, but neither are hard to get to. The schools are good in CCISD.

I live in a nearby subdivision... Lake Cove is very nice, lots of kids in that neighborhood. Seabrook is a great family friendly town. Plenty of park/trails/beaches... close proximity to the Kemah boardwalk (small amusement-type park)... a couple miles from space Center Houston. The clear lake area in general has just about every imaginable child/family activity.

Yes, there's a Krogers right near there on 146 (but I don't like it). I prefer to drive to the La Porte Kroger, or one of the numerous other grocery stores in Clear Lake. There's also a Walmart and Target on the other side of the Kemah bridge... probably a mile from Lake Cove. Closest mall is Baybrook, which is around 10 miles due west of Seabrook along I45.

CCISD schools are some of the best in the Houston area. Your elementary would be Bay, which I don't know much about specifically, but they do have an Exemplary (highest) TEA rating, if you put much stock in that. Seabrook Intermediate would be the junior high, and is also highly rated. You'd be zoned to the new high school (Clear Falls), it looks impressive.

Just beware of the monster that lurks at the northern part of town. The Bayport Facility - with its chemical plants and storage containment from countries around the world - is a growing source of pollution and possible explosions. Residents fought its expansion for a number of years, and eventually lost. Big oil and big chemical refining have strong ties to local and state government. The buddy system ensures that they will always get their way when it comes down to issues that either benefit industry or benefit residential quality of life. Even worse, the Port of Houston, which has its fingerprints all over the site, gets money from taxpayers to continue its dirty deeds.

That's one reason why I moved away from that area. It's a shame too. Researching the town, and it used to be completely different, say 100 years ago; a fishing and tourist town with beaches and water that people actually could swim in. It's still nice, but the shadow of industry continues its slow march.

Seabrook is great. Everything you are looking for is nearby. If you want a boat, you should also look at League City considering your budget. You could live in some of the nicest subdivisions on the water.
