Yeah, I will keep practicing before I rely on my own BBQ. I can cook many things, but BBQ takes lots of skill in my opinion. Good BBQ anyway.

I don't care for that style. Best BBQ I've had was made by individuals. Pappa and such are average.

OP: No...Rudy's isn't the best. In fact, I think all the chains are lacking.

So far, I've only liked Inlaws & Outlaws in Manvel. There's a truck where a guy sells BBQ and people around here rave about it. He takes orders so I may have to try it sometime.

Best BBQ I've ever had is in Williamsburg, KS at a place called Guy & Mae's Tavern. Way better than Gates in KC, imo. G & M followed closely by a place in Killeen but the name escapes me.

Some bbq places do some things well, but none of them do all things well. It really depends on what you like to eat. I like the brisket at Rudy's but I think the ribs suck. Overall, my personal favorites are Lyndons, off 290, and Central Texas BBQ, in Pearland. Lyndon's has the best sausage I've ever had. Central Texas is pretty good across the board, and their sides are top notch.

Goode BBQ company is pretty good. So is Tony's in Clear Lake. Joe's in Alvin is also very good.

You've just got to try different ones to find one you like. BBQ is a very subjective thing.

Tony's has good meat; the sides are not really worth getting. They can crank out some excellent brisket most of the time but even that is not 100% consistent. Rudy's is building one of those here and I'm curious how it will compare to the original one in San Antonio. Been there several times but I've never tried any of the other Rudys.

My theory is the better BBQ is going to be found on the extreme outskirts, where things are a bit more isolated, big pits for slow cooking and obscene amounts of smoke. At a restaurant level you need some real estate to do it right, and you don't really see this in the city or developed suburbs. Just a thought anyway.

Goode Company is the best I've found so far. I agree with retrodog though, BBQ is very subjective.
