Time to put on my big-girl pants and get to the dentist!

I haven't been in over 10 years and while everything seems fine due to devout brushing and flossing, I'm deathly afraid of going. I want to get my teeth cleaned and have some old fillings looked at, and just make sure things in general are OK.

With that being said, can any of you recommend a family dentist in the Katy area who deals well with dentist-phobia and has a calm, gentle manner?

Thanks in advance. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Calm, gentle manner? That describes Dr. Crabtree on Westheimer in Katy. Only downside is that he does not offer nitrous oxide so if you need that to calm your nerves, you should probably look elsewhere. I have heard good things from friends about Dr. Brad Barker at La Centerra, as well. He apparently uses all the bells and whistles when it comes to making his patients feel completely comfortable, including sedation dentistry where you are conscious but don't feel a thing. I had a friend who went to him and she hadn't been to the dentist in 7 years because she was so phobic -- she said he was great!

Face your phobia or deal with costly fixes or lose your teeth...take you pick. Take care of them now or you will pay dearly down the road since most dental insurance do not cover much. There's no pain in cleaning! You'll feel much better with a clean mouth afterwards. The phobia may be more of an embarrassment on your bad teeth, rather than the pain itself.

With all due respect, you have obviously never had sensitive teeth. Believe it or not, many people really do find it painful to have their teeth cleaned, especially with the ultrasonic cleaning tools they use these days. I've met a number of dentists who admit that it's not comfortable for those with highly sensitive teeth, unless some pain relief is given prior to the cleaning. And I didn't see anywhere in the OP's post where she said she had bad teeth...?

When I lived in Katy we used Dr Bridgett Tissue and Dr Ingrid Duebbert at The Kingsland Dental Group. It's an all female office and they are great. They are very kind and understanding. I'm sure if you tell them your situation they will be extra gentle.

Thanks to all of you for your helpful responses. I'm going to call the dentists you all suggested and talk to them and see which one sounds right for me.

TexasCatherine, you're absolutely right. My teeth are in good shape, but they are a bit sensitive. So even a regular cleaning isn't comfortable for me. That's why I asked for someone gentle.

I appreciate everyone's time and help. I'm off to make some phone calls!

I believe it was at Kingsland Dental that they did not clean my teeth with the traditional method, but with the ultrasonic method instead. You should ask about it. It's more gentle than the regular scraping method. I've had it done somewhere, and I believe it was at Kingsland.
