Hello all. I need some advice obtaining employment in Houston. I've lived in California my whole life, however the economy here is so bad along with the cost of living. I'm in my early forties and would certainly like the opportunity to own my own home, which will never happen in California. Long story short, I don't want to make the move without having employment in place first. Can anyone recommend an employment agency that can assist with a situation like mine? I have several years experience in writing service for the auto and boating industries. I'd like to see if I could transition that into the Energy/Oil industry. Thanks in advance for your help. I'm ready to get outa here!!!

It's not really easier to find a job here than it is in other states. If you don't know anyone, it's even harder.

I don't have any good leads, but check here Workforce Solutions

They periodically have job fairs for oil and gas. Or at the least these folks can give you leads. I'm in my early 40s too. Hopefully you can find something here. Good luck!

If you're flexible on location and want to break into the industry, I think North Dakota is probably the best place in the country for you. Booming industry up there, I've seen their unemployment is ~4%, and it's all because of the natural gas fields being developed.

If you write service for the auto industry, try www.indeed.com and call some dealerships in Houston...you can google...send your resume out and get a job in Houston, then try Oil related stuff once you're in town

oil business is not easy to get into, and a service writer background does not help.

Default Encouragement

If I were you I would go ahead and try for a job here. But stick with what you know. You won't get a job in oil and gas. There's an abundance of unemployed people already here who are heavily experienced in oil and gas. Me for example.
It's a myth that there's an abundance of jobs in the Houston area. You have to be a perfect fit for the available jobs. It's not like you can pick the one you want and just take it.
