Hurricane Dean
A spinoff from the Erin thread. That thread could be used for the aftermath of Erin. Anyway, look like the models have shifted quite a bit:

If the blue path is the what Dean takes, then Dean will be worse than Katrina. Remember, Katrina hit New Orleans with the weaker left side. It made landfall on the Louisiana/Mississippi state line. If Dean makes landfall around Baton Rouge, then it would be like running out of gas in a high speed police chase.

Notice they are pinning the "doomsday" locations to be hit. Talk about economic boost when millions of people scounge every store and gas station! I remember seeing $4.57 per gallon during Rita.

The models will continue to change overnight. It will be interesting to see where the landfall chances are tomorrow.

^^sweet.
This thing needs to just go north and hit the Carolinas or something. I don't want gas prices to go up any higher than they have to.

My first hurricane season
It is a little terrifying. People who've lived here for a while act like it's no big deal. I live in the northwest inner loop. I live in new construction and am not in the 100 year flood plain from what I can tell. I was told flooding shouldn't be a problem in my area. At least that is what the research before my purchase led me to believe. I recently got flood insurance but I hear it takes 30-40 days to kick in. What is the general plan when these things happen. We have the batteries, candles, food and water. We will top off the gas tanks tomorrow. Maybe I'm just freaking out but I need to know what people with more experience have done or are planning on doing.

Where'd you come from?
Lose the candles and get flashlights. If the candles start a fire, consider yourself on your own putting it out. You don't want your the storm to spare your house only for a fire to take it.
I really do not think this storm is going to have a major effect here besides panic, but it is time for people to start thinking about what they're going to do.
People in the city of Houston just need to stay put. Let the people along the shores of the Gulf and bay (Galveston, Texas City, Clear Lake et. Al) get out first.
The Rita evacuation fiasco was not caused by bad planning as much as people freaking out and leaving before they were supposed to.
