Another article on CNN says that Texans don't spend a lot so I believe that. Lot of old money here too.

Houston is also one of the best cities to do business in the country and also because of the Oil and Gas industry.

I wonder where these people are from? Race, ethnicity, age group, education, type of work, etc.

Well, Texas is huge so it all depends on the locations.

Bob Lanier made us learn this for the 2008 AHFT (Annual Houstonian Fact Test) and you have to pass the AHFT to live in Houston or near Houston.
