So we are going away for xmas. My son is in K and he will probably miss the total of 13 days of school. I told this to teacher and she told me that they will have to report us to police. Hrrrrrrrrrr....Any ways to avoid this. Just seems sooooooooooooo wrong. Could we have a valid excuse? I am just worried...

i feel it is silly for them to report truancy if you are proactive and tell the district, but that is up to the district and local truancy ordinances, the teach just has to do her job.

however, i think it is silly to take your kid out of school for so long for a vacation. most schools get two weeks for xmas break and 3 months for summer, plus spring break and many get a whole week for thanksgiving. there is plenty of time to go on vacation and NOT pull your child from school.

when i was a kid, my parents wouldnt dare do that....and i wouldnt either once i have kids.

13 days of schools is more than 2.5 weeks. that's a lot of time to miss. i personally wouldn't do it.

Default well, our parents

are far away. It just does not make sense to go there for 2 weeks with all the travel and time adjustment. Plus it is only K so any suggestions? plus we are international family and our holidays are different from US

Well, here's the deal...when you have kids there are just certain things you give up. Vacation time during the school year is one of them. Private school wouldn't let you take two ADDITIONAL weeks after Christmas either.

Flying your family here is probably the best option.

The Police aren't gonna do anything. If they show up explain the situation. nothing more. My kids missed more days in a school year, they started sending us letters blah blah blah. Throw in the trash.

In Fort Bend ISD, parents withdraw their children from public school, take extended vacations without being reported to police, and then re-enroll their children when they return.

The school system hates it because they lose funding but personally, I believe a few weeks traveling globally is a really nice educational experience.

fair enough, but seriously, you need to go for more than 2 weeks? that is a long vacation anywhere in the world.
