I'm thinking about moving to Houston after undergrad..I live in Chicago. I know that Houston is the 4th largest city in the US. I don't mind the humidity...I love the heat...How is the job market?? Heard it was really good...but I wouldn't move there without one. I plan on visiting soon...I heard that there isn't really a body of water nearby which somewhat bothers me but I may be able to get over that...Should I consider Houston or Dallas??

I recently visited Houston and encountered a really big body of water close by ( 50 miles away) called the Gulf of Mexico.

You want my honest advice for someone coming out of undergrad? Apply for 1,000 jobs and take the best one you can get, regardless of whether it's in New York or Anchorage. At that point in your career, your #1 priority should be getting the best experience you can as soon as you can. After you get some good experience, you'll be able to write your own ticket for the rest of your life.

It all depends on what your looking for out of Houston honestly. The truth is it has everything you need jobs, culture, nightlife, beaches, parks, single people, I mean space is the limit.

Stay in Chicago or go to California or New York if you are young. Houston is boring for young people. If you love outdoor sport or outdoor shopping, you won't be doing that here. It is just way too hot here in the summer. IMO Houston is perfect for raising a family or retired folks. Things are cheaper here and you get bigger house for your money compare to other major cities.

That is just my experience. I live in Houston for more than 20 years.

This. If you don't have ties anywhere, go where ever the best job is.
I can't tell you what city you will like or dislike. You just have to experience them for yourself. Now's the time!

Get a job first, then worry about whether you like Houston or not!

Any place will have its pros and cons... as you get older, you may find that what you thought was important it no longer is...

I came to Houston in the mid 90s and went to school here... hated the city... I would visit Miami to visit friends and love it there, so 3 days after I graduated I packed my car and moved there... Loved it for a while, but after I while, what I thought was important just wasn't anymore...

Living in Houston I always went to Galveston (nasty beach) visiting Miami I loved the beach so much I thought I would go there every day... which I did at first in Miami... After 6 months, I would rarely go to the beach...

As the years went by, my priorities changed and now I wanted to have a family and get a house.... turns out Miami wasn't the place for it... I have Family in Houston so I kept visiting and I liked what I saw... so I ended up moving back... Sometimes life works out in different ways that you imagine...

As many have said here, I wouldn't pick and city and then try to get a job there... I would rather find a good job, the rest will come... If you have a good job, you can do nice things, fun things, just about anywhere....

I have always lived in big cities so to me that has always been more of a priority than where exactly that city was...

Good luck!

The Gulf doesn't compare at all to Lake Michigan, especially if the OP is coming from the heart of the city. Chicago + Lake Michigan together is picturesque. While the Gulf has some good days, it is mostly murky muddy and again, it's 50 miles away. Galveston Bay is actually closer at about 30 miles with a few small beaches that can actually be less murky than the Gulf... but oil industry is in the backdrop (and in the air).
